Same failure on a second machine: Microsoft Surface Pro 11 for Business
(Intel Core Ultra 7 268V), Bluetooth 00:14.7 [8086:a876], firmware
ibt-0190-0291, Ubuntu 26.04. Seen on 7.0.0-30 and 7.0.0-34.
Three things we measured that may help:
1. It is a race, not a slow load. The second image (pci.sfi) takes about
650 ms on every boot, good or bad. The 60 ms it is compared with above is
the first image (iml.sfi). What marks a failing boot is gp1 mailbox
interrupts arriving before "Waiting for firmware download to complete". Your
full log shows exactly that, on both attempts.
2. It is in Ubuntu's kernel, not in mainline. Warm reboots on this
machine:
Ubuntu 7.0.0-34 9 of 28 failed
mainline v7.0, built with Ubuntu's 7.0.0-34 config 0 of 41
bluetooth-next (7.2-rc6), the same config 0 of 41
So something in Ubuntu's delta over v7.0, the 7.0.y stable updates or
Ubuntu's own patches, brings it in. It is not the one btintel_pcie change
in that delta ("Fix incorrect MAC access programming"), whose code only
runs after a hardware exception.
3. A caution for the workaround. Reload btintel_pcie only after the firmware
setup has given up, roughly 10 s after boot on a failing boot. Unloading
while the setup still runs tears it down half-way, and the next probe then
fails with -62 and leaves no adapter at all. A service that waits for this
is in https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/pull/2267
(contrib/surface-pro-11-bluetooth-recovery).
I can test kernels on this machine if that helps.
