Public bug reported:
1. System & Environment Details
Distribution: Ubuntu (24.04 LTS / latest release)
Kernel version working fine: 7.0.0-28-generic
Kernel version triggering Kernel Panic: 7.0.0-31-generic / 7.0.0-34-generic
Disk Setup: Encrypted SSD using LUKS / DM-Crypt (with LVM on LUKS)
Architecture: x86_64 / amd64
2. Description of the Issue
When booting into newer kernel updates (specifically 7.0.0-31-generic or
7.0.0-34-generic), the boot process fails at a very early stage before
prompting for the LUKS decryption passphrase.
The system hangs completely with the following error on screen:
```
KERNEL PANIC! VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
```
The issue does not occur when booting from the older kernel 7.0.0-28-generic,
which unlocks the LUKS volume and boots into the OS normally.
3. Key Observations & Troubleshooting Performed
Initramfs rebuild failed to resolve: Executing `sudo update-
initramfs -u -k all` from a working kernel did not resolve the panic for
the newer kernel version.
Missing LUKS hooks / modules at early boot: The error unknown-
block(0,0) indicates that the kernel fails to load the early initramfs
ramdisk or lacks the necessary dm-crypt / LUKS modules required to
present the block device to the kernel before rootfs mounting.
DKMS Module Collision: Attempting to process DKMS modules during
updates (e.g. virtualbox-dkms) threw build errors (exit status 11),
blocking full dpkg package configuration for linux-
image-7.0.0-34-generic.
IMPORTANT - Log Persistence Note: Because the failure occurs before
the root filesystem or volatile journal storage is mounted, no crash
dumps or dmesg traces could be written to /var/log/journal/.
4. Steps to Reproduce
Install Ubuntu with full disk encryption (LUKS / DM-Crypt).
Install VirtualBox from App Center - version: 7.0.16-dfsg-2ubuntu1.3
Upgrade kernel to 7.0.0-31-generic (or 7.0.0-34-generic).
Reboot the machine and select the new kernel entry from the GRUB menu.
The boot process immediately halts with KERNEL PANIC! VFS: Unable to mount
root fs on unknown-block(0,0) before the LUKS passphrase prompt appears.
5. Expected Behavior
The new kernel should successfully load the initramfs image, initialize
crypto drivers (dm_crypt, aes, xts, sha256), prompt the user for the
LUKS decryption password, and mount the root filesystem.
