Public bug reported:

Upgrade from 24.04 to 26.04.1 failed when base-files' preinst aborted
because /lib32 was a dangling symlink (/usr/lib32 had been removed when
the last lib32 package was uninstalled). The upgrader said it would roll
back but then reported "upgrade complete", leaving sources on resolute,
base-files unconfigured, 1,100+ packages half-installed and GDM not
starting. Recovered via apt -f install. Suggest the upgrader pre-checks
for dangling /lib32, /lib64 or /libx32 links (or recreates the target
directory), and that a failed rollback isn't reported as success.
