Public bug reported:
Package: gnustep-base-common
Version: 1.31.1-4ubuntu2
Release: Kubuntu 26.04
Locale: pl_PL.UTF-8
Summary
-------
Every time a GNUstep-based tool is run in the Polish locale, it prints
this warning:
File NSDictionary.m: 671. In -[NSDictionary initWithContentsOfFile:]
Contents of file '/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/GNUstep/Libraries/gnustep-base/
Versions/1.31/Resources/Languages/Polish' does not contain a dictionary
The file is a symlink to:
/usr/share/GNUstep/Libraries/gnustep-base/Versions/1.31/Resources/Languages/Polish
It belongs to gnustep-base-common. It is not empty (1562 bytes) and is
UTF-8 text. It looks like a normal property list starting with
"/* Polish */ {", but GNUstep fails to load it.
Impact
------
The warning is printed to the same output that other programs read.
Ark (KDE archive manager) uses "lsar" from the unar package to list
LHA archives. Because of the warning, Ark shows:
"The archive is empty or Ark cannot read its contents."
The same archive is listed correctly in the terminal, so the archive
is fine.
Steps to reproduce
------------------
1. Install unar and ark. Use the Polish locale (LANG=pl_PL.UTF-8).
2. Run: lsar some_archive.lha
-> the warning above is printed before the file list.
3. Open the same .lha file in Ark
-> Ark shows an empty archive with an error message.
Expected result
---------------
No warning, and Ark lists the archive contents.
Actual result
-------------
Warning on every run. Ark cannot read the archive.
Additional information
----------------------
- With LANG=de_DE.UTF-8 there is no warning, so the problem is
specific to the Polish file.
- With LC_ALL=C or LC_ALL=C.UTF-8 there is no warning and Ark lists
the archive correctly.
- Workaround: copy /usr/share/applications/org.kde.ark.desktop to
~/.local/share/applications/ and change every "Exec=" line to start
with "env LC_ALL=C.UTF-8 ", for example:
Exec=env LC_ALL=C.UTF-8 ark %U
- I have not found the exact cause inside the file.
