Public bug reported:

[Impact]

On Ubuntu 26.04 (GNOME Shell 50, Wayland), while any window on another
workspace is
marked urgent / demands attention (e.g. the shell shows a "“App” is ready"
notification),
switching workspaces with Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right (or any other method) works for a
moment,
then ~20 ms later the shell jumps to the workspace of the urgent window. The
user can
effectively not leave that window's workspace until the attention flag clears.

[Test Case]

1. Have windows on at least 3 workspaces; Desktop Icons ([email protected])
enabled (default).
2. On workspace A, make a window request attention while unfocused, e.g. in a
terminal:
sleep 5; printf '\a' (with the terminal's bell set to mark the
window urgent)
or use any app that flags its window (Electron apps finishing a task, etc.),
then switch
   to workspace B within the 5 s.
3. Confirm the "“…” is ready" notification appears.
4. Press Ctrl+Alt+Right to go to workspace C.
   Expected: stay on workspace C.
Actual: workspace C is shown briefly, then the shell switches to workspace A.

[Root cause]

[email protected]/emulateX11WindowType.js, `_refreshWindows(checkWorkspace)`:
after a
workspace change it "activate[s] the top-most window" taken from

    global.display.get_tab_list(Meta.TabList.NORMAL_ALL,
activeWorkspace)

Mutter's tab list for a workspace also includes windows on *other* workspaces
that demand
attention (so Alt+Tab can reach them). The urgent window is first in that list,
so DING
calls `Main.activateWindow(urgentWindow)`, which calls
`workspace.activate_with_focus()` on the urgent window's workspace.

Captured stack for the unexpected workspace change (GNOME Shell 50.1,
mutter 50.1):

    Meta.Workspace.activate_with_focus(<urgent window's workspace>)
    activateWindow resource:///org/gnome/shell/ui/main.js:930
    _refreshWindows/this._activate_window_ID<

/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/[email protected]/emulateX11WindowType.js:412

preceded by `window-demands-attention` for that window, and following a normal
`_showWorkspaceSwitcher → actionMoveWorkspace` switch away from it.

[Fix]

Skip windows not located on the active workspace (attached patch,
ding-skip-other-workspace-windows.patch). Verified locally: with the patch the
switch behaves normally while the attention notification is showing; without it
the
bounce reproduces every time.

[Where Problems Could Occur]

Only the selection of which window DING focuses after a workspace change.
Windows on
all workspaces still pass (`located_on_workspace()` is true for them). If the
active
workspace has no eligible window, the existing fallback (focus DING's own
desktop
window) is used, as it already is for empty workspaces.

[Other Info]

- Affects 26.04: gnome-shell-ubuntu-extensions 50.26.04.8ubuntu pins
desktop-icons-ng
  f16a47af267b8c10f339913354ed9d8c83b63807 (salsa
ubuntu-dev-team/desktop-icons-ng).
- Not present in 26.10 (51.x): the GTK4 port (salsa commit aa27c4a5, 2026-07-10)
rewrote emulateX11WindowType.js and removed this code path, so this needs a
targeted SRU to 26.04 rather than a backport.
