Public bug reported:

# Boot error with kernel 7.0.0-38: nvidia-gpu / ucsi_ccg I2C timeout

## System information

* **Distribution:** Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon 64-bit
* **Kernel with the issue:** 7.0.0-38-generic
* **Previous kernel:** 7.0.0-34-generic
* **CPU:** AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
* **Motherboard:** ASUS Prime X570-Pro
* **GPU:** NVIDIA TU116 GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER
* **Desktop environment:** Cinnamon
* **Display server:** X11

## Problem description

After upgrading the Linux kernel from **7.0.0-34-generic** to
**7.0.0-38-generic**, several error messages started appearing during
the boot process, shortly before the login screen appears.

These messages did **not appear with the previous 7.0.0-34-generic
kernel**.

The system continues booting normally and, once Cinnamon has started, it
appears to work normally. So far, the problem seems to be limited to
these messages during the boot process.

## Messages displayed during boot

The following messages appear during boot:

```text
nvidia-gpu 0000:09:00.3: I2C timeout error
ucsi_ccg ... I2C transfer failed -110
ucsi_ccg ... ucsi_ccg_init failed
probe with driver ucsi_ccg failed with error -110
```

## USB-C

There is currently no USB-C device connected to the computer.

In fact, the computer case I am currently using **does not have any
USB-C ports**, so there is no external USB-C device connected during
boot.

## Kernel comparison

### Kernel 7.0.0-34-generic

* The system boots normally.
* The `nvidia-gpu` / `ucsi_ccg` messages described above do not appear.

### Kernel 7.0.0-38-generic

* The I2C/UCSI errors appear during boot.
* The system continues booting and reaches the login screen.
* Once the system has started, I have not noticed any significant functional
problems.

## Expected behavior

The system should boot without the `nvidia-gpu`, `ucsi_ccg`, and
I2C-related errors.

## Question

Could this be a regression introduced in kernel **7.0.0-38**, or
possibly a change in the NVIDIA/UCSI driver that causes a USB-C-related
controller on the GPU to be initialized even though there is no USB-C
port or device connected?

The problem appeared immediately after upgrading from kernel
**7.0.0-34** to **7.0.0-38**.

Any advice on additional logs I should provide, or tests that could help
identify the cause of the problem, would be greatly appreciated.
