Public bug reported:

System:

Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon, based on Ubuntu 24.04 Noble

Failing kernel: 7.0.0-38-generic (Ubuntu 7.0.0-38.38~24.04.4, upstream
7.0.14)

Working kernel: 6.17.0-35-generic

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

dGPU: AMD Navi 32 / Radeon RX 7800 XT, PCI 03:00.0, ID 1002:747e

iGPU: AMD Raphael, PCI 18:00.0, ID 1002:164e

Mesa: 26.2.3~kisak1~n (Kisak Mesa PPA)

linux-firmware: 20240318.git3b128b60.0ubuntu3.1

Problem:
Booting kernel 7.0.0-38-generic results in a black screen after GRUB. The
graphical desktop is not visible on any connected display.

The problem is reproducible. Booting 6.17.0-35-generic on the same
system works normally.

Relevant lines from the failed 7.0.0-38 boot:

amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: probe with driver amdgpu failed with error -22
amdgpu 0000:18:00.0: probe with driver amdgpu failed with error -22

Both the discrete RX 7800 XT and the integrated Raphael GPU therefore
fail to probe under the affected kernel.

Recovery mode / nomodeset allows the system to reach the desktop, but
without normal amdgpu acceleration and with only limited display
functionality.

Additional observation:
After one failed graphics boot, a subsequent warm reboot into 6.17.0-35 also
resulted in a black screen. Its kernel log contained:

amdgpu 0000:18:00.0: [drm] Failed to setup vendor infoframe on connector
HDMI-A-2: -22
amdgpu 0000:18:00.0: [drm] REG_WAIT timeout 1us * 100000 tries -
optc31_disable_crtc line:145

Completely powering the computer off and performing a cold boot restored
normal operation with kernel 6.17. This may indicate that the graphics
hardware is left in a problematic state across a warm reboot, although I
have not confirmed the exact cause.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Power the system off completely.

2. Boot normally with 7.0.0-38-generic.

3. After GRUB, all displays remain black.

4. Booting 6.17.0-35-generic after a full power cycle restores normal
graphics.

Expected:
The graphical desktop starts normally with amdgpu loaded.

Actual:
Both AMD GPU devices fail to probe with error -22 and the displays remain black.

I am filing this report while running 6.17.0-35 because 7.0.0-38 does
not provide a usable display. I have attached the kernel journal from
the failed 7.0.0-38 boot separately.
