Public bug reported:

libapache2-mod-ldap-userdir 1.1.19-2.2 fails to build in stonking on
amd64, amd64v3, arm64, ppc64el and s390x. armhf and riscv64 build.
Debian builds the same version on all architectures.

Build log (amd64, 2026-09-24):
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libapache2-mod-ldap-userdir/1.1.19-2.2/+build/32793477

  apxs -c -Wdate-time -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=3 -Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions ...
-flto=auto -ffat-lto-objects -Wl,-z,relro ...
  apxs:Error: Unknown option: f.
  apxs:Error: Unknown option: t.
  apxs:Error: Unknown option: -.
  make[2]: *** [Makefile:10: .libs/mod_ldap_userdir.so] Error 1

== Cause ==

Makefile.in runs:

  $(APXS) -c $(CPPFLAGS) $(LDFLAGS) $(LIBS) $(TLS) mod_ldap_userdir.c

apxs only accepts compiler and linker flags wrapped as -Wc,... or
-Wl,.... Most of Ubuntu's LDFLAGS already have the -Wl, prefix, but
Ubuntu's dpkg-buildflags also add bare "-flto=auto -ffat-lto-objects" to
LDFLAGS. apxs parses those as unknown single-letter options and stops.

This matches the architecture pattern: Ubuntu does not enable LTO by
default on armhf and riscv64, and those are the two that build.
(Inferred from the pattern; the armhf/riscv64 logs were not checked.)
Debian does not enable LTO by default, so it is not affected.

1.1.19-2.2 (Debian NMU) switched debian/rules to a plain dh sequence
(#989941), so the full buildflags, including LDFLAGS, now reach
configure and the Makefile. 1.1.19-2.1build4 in the stonking release
pocket built with the older packaging. The exact difference between the
two versions was not diffed.

== Suggested fix (untested) ==

Ubuntu delta, simplest: disable LTO in debian/rules:

  export DEB_BUILD_MAINT_OPTIONS=hardening=+all,-branch optimize=-lto

Better long-term, for Debian/upstream: make Makefile.in pass flags to
apxs in wrapped form (e.g. -Wc,$(CFLAGS) and -Wl,... for linker flags),
so it works with any LTO-enabled toolchain.
