Hi Simon Not Fix.....
So, after all our tries, 26 stops dead at the point where it says "closing ? screen" (I think it's just about to put the gui up) puts the cursor up which moves but can't get any other response from click or keyboard. If I press power off and escape, I see Ubuntu issuing shutting down commands and it powers off. So ... I have made a bootable USB stick with 24 on and this can see both the installed disc file system and my backup file system which is a relief. I am now running live from the USB stick for stuff I am behind with which is urgent. (Includes this email.) My plan when time allows is to make an additional backup on an external HDD in case of further difficulties and clean install from DVD which I have ordered and then restore backup. Medium term I need to find a new (refurbished) laptop with more memory and faster processor - my spreadsheets are getting large and heavy. If there is any information on the file system which would be useful to you, I can retrieve it. Does this help?
