Yes, I suspect something (HW or size issue) wrong with my boot partition. 26 will not install from the bootable USB alongside 24, upgrade won't run, so I think the only alternative is reinitialise the disk. I have two user data backups running OK with Ubuntu running directly off the USB, so I will take the plunge at the weekend.
Medium term replace 10yo laptop which struggles for memory with larger and larger software and data. Thanks for all your help.
