Today I have trying to find where this bug was introduced. I did find
the kernel which contains the bug. I did everything myself. However I
used AI to summarize what I did. Also, I'm still not able to update the
bugreport on freedesktop as I only have a gmail email which is not
allowed...
Kernel version bisection – summary
HARDWARE / SYSTEM
- Sony laptop, NVIDIA GT216M [GeForce GT 330M] [10de:0a29],
subsystem Sony [104d:9067], VBIOS 70.16.45.00.05
- Driver: nouveau (open source), internal panel on LVDS-1
- Panel native resolution: 1920x1080
- Test system: Debian 12 (bookworm), default kernel 6.1.0-54-amd64
METHOD
To rule out distribution patches, I tested unmodified upstream kernels
using the Ubuntu mainline builds (kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline,
linux-image-unsigned + linux-modules packages) installed on Debian 12.
Each kernel was booted and checked for the correct panel resolution.
RESULTS
Kernel Resolution Result
6.1.0-54 (Debian) 1920x1080 good
6.4.0 (mainline) 1920x1080 good
6.6.0 (mainline) 1920x1080 good
6.7.0 (mainline) 2048x1536 BAD
6.8.0 (Ubuntu, as originally reported) BAD
=> The regression was introduced between v6.6 and v6.7.
(Release candidates were not tested.)
EVIDENCE: v6.6.0 vs v6.7.0
1. Panel EDID (wc -c < /sys/class/drm/card0-LVDS-1/edid)
v6.6.0: 128 bytes
v6.7.0: 0 bytes <-- EDID is no longer read from the panel
2. Mode list (head -3 /sys/class/drm/card0-LVDS-1/modes)
v6.6.0: 1920x1080, 1920x1080, 1680x1050
v6.7.0: 2048x1536, 1920x1200, 1920x1080
The preferred mode on v6.7 (2048x1536) matches the VBIOS flat panel
mode that both kernels log:
nouveau 0000:01:00.0: DRM: BIOS FP mode: 2048x1536 (200000kHz pixel clock)
Without the EDID, nouveau on v6.7 apparently falls back to this
VBIOS value, which is wrong for this panel.
3. Kernel log difference
v6.6.0 logs the DCB table during nouveau init:
DRM: DCB version 4.0
DRM: DCB outp 00: 010003f3 00010036
DRM: DCB outp 01: 02011300 00000000
DRM: DCB outp 02: 02422362 00020010
DRM: DCB conn 00: 00000040
DRM: DCB conn 01: 00000100
DRM: DCB conn 02: 00001261
v6.7.0 does not log any of these lines. The rest of the nouveau
initialization output is identical.
CONCLUSION
Since v6.7, nouveau no longer reads the EDID of the LVDS panel on this
GT216 laptop, and uses the incorrect VBIOS flat panel mode (2048x1536)
as the preferred mode instead of the panel's native 1920x1080.
The problem is still present in 6.8.
