Public bug reported:
After an idle auto-suspend (S3, deep), the system resumed but the
display never came back. Keyboard and mouse gave no response, the
network stayed unreachable, and the fans stayed high. Recovery required
holding the power button.
Expected: the display and session come back after resume.
The kernel's hung-task detector shows a lock-ordering deadlock during resume:
- kworker "fbcon_register_existing_fbs" (fbcon taking over the console) holds
console_lock and is blocked in nvkms_ioctl_from_kapi <-
__nv_drm_connector_detect_internal <- drm_fb_helper_hotplug_event.
- nvidia-sleep.sh (systemd-suspend.service resume step) is blocked in
os_disable_console_access <- rm_power_management <- nvidia_resume <-
nv_procfs_write_suspend, waiting on the console semaphore held by that kworker.
- console_callback, setfont (console-setup), and others queue behind them.
systemd's SIGKILL of nvidia-sleep.sh at the stop timeout has no effect (D
state).
Configuration follows NVIDIA's documented setup: nvidia-suspend, nvidia-
resume and nvidia-hibernate services enabled;
NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1; NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var (86
GB free).
System: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, kernel 7.0.0-38-generic, nvidia-driver-580
580.178.04-0ubuntu0.26.04.1, GeForce GTX 1050 (2 GB). Upgraded from
24.04 on 2026-10-20; this is the first failed resume observed since.
Also seen on resume: an xhci reinit on 0000:04:00.0 (USBSTS 0x401) and a
USB device that failed to resume with -5. These recovered and seem
incidental.
Attached: an excerpt of the journal from suspend entry through the hang,
including all hung-task stack traces.
