Public bug reported:
Hardware: Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 (21G2S0S800), Intel Meteor Lake-P
[Intel Arc Graphics] [8086:7d55], internal eDP panel only (no external
monitor, no dock). BIOS R2DET42W 1.27 (2026-04-24), latest per fwupd.
Software: Ubuntu 24.04.5, linux-signed-hwe-7.0 7.0.0-38.3824.04.4 (also
seen on 7.0.0-30, -31, -34), libmutter-14-0 46.2-1ubuntu0.24.04.18,
gnome-shell 46.0-0ubuntu624.04.16. Extensions: the Ubuntu defaults
(ubuntu-dock, ding, tiling-assistant, appindicators).
What happens With nothing plugged in or unplugged, GNOME Shell on
Wayland repeatedly rebuilds its monitor layout (bursts of assertions
below, several times a day). Some bursts end with GNOME Shell crashing
with SIGSEGV; the session is lost and GDM's login screen appears. This
also happens unattended at night.
Journal before each crash (same every time): gnome-shell: Window manager
warning: Overwriting existing binding of keysym 31..39 (ubuntu-dock
hotkeys re-registered) gnome-shell:
meta_monitor_manager_get_logical_monitor_from_number: assertion
'(unsigned int) number < g_list_length (manager->logical_monitors)'
failed gnome-shell: meta_workspace_get_work_area_for_monitor: assertion
'logical_monitor != NULL' failed gnome-shell:
meta_display_get_monitor_in_fullscreen: assertion 'monitor >= 0 &&
monitor < n_logical_monitors' failed gnome-shell: GNOME Shell crashed
with signal 11 No kernel, USB, Bluetooth, input or DRM hotplug messages
precede the bursts. The only i915 warning (once per boot): "[drm]
Selective fetch area calculation failed in pipe A".
Backtrace (apport, /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash, without
debug symbols): SIGSEGV in libmutter-14.so.0, called from libffi from
wl_event_loop_dispatch (libwayland-server), i.e. while mutter handles a
Wayland client request after the monitor layout changed.
When it started
Kernel 6.17 (HWE) until mid-August 2026: no crashes except one isolated one on
31 July.
HWE kernel 7.0 from 15 August 2026: crashes regularly from 2 September, every
1-3 days, on every 7.0 update since (-30, -31, -34, -38).
The GNOME, mutter and Mesa updates of 12 October did not change the pattern.
Turning screen blanking off did not help.
Related upstream: mutter issue #3402 (same assertion and crash on mutter 46,
usually triggered by unplugging a dock). Here nothing is unplugged, which
suggests the 7.0 i915 driver produces spurious monitor changes on this hardware
(possibly related to PSR2 selective fetch), and mutter 46 crashes on them.
Workaround being tested: "Ubuntu on Xorg" session since 2026-10-24. If
crashes continue, i915.enable_psr2_sel_fetch=0, then i915.enable_psr=0.
