Another trigger on gtk3, on Ubuntu 26.04 (gtk+3.0 3.24.52, gdk-pixbuf
2.44.5 with glycin 2.1.5): a full or inode-exhausted /tmp.
With glycin, gdk-pixbuf writes a temporary /tmp/gdk-pixbuf-glycin-
tmp.XXXXXX file even for icons in the installed theme. When /tmp is out
of space or inodes, loading the fallback image-missing icon fails and
GTK aborts:
Gtk:ERROR:../../../gtk/gtkiconhelper.c:495:ensure_surface_for_gicon:
assertion failed (error == NULL): Failed to load
/usr/share/icons/elementary-xfce/status/16/image-missing.png: Failed to
create file "/tmp/gdk-pixbuf-glycin-tmp.BOLCY3": No space left on device
(g-file-error-quark, 12)
/tmp is a tmpfs with Ubuntu's default nr_inodes=1m, so test suites that
create many small files can exhaust it while df -h still shows plenty of
free space. In my case the panel plugin wrapper aborted this way.
libwnck aborted at the same moment for the same reason (reported
upstream), taking down xfce4-session and ending the X session.
A failed icon load, including the fallback icon, shouldn't abort the
process. Drawing nothing, or an empty surface, with a warning would be
enough.
