After linux-firmware-amd-graphics upgraded from
20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu3.3 to 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu3.4,
the display controller on my RX 9070 XT fails continuously from boot.
System:
- Linux Mint 22.3 (Ubuntu 24.04 noble base; package from
archive.ubuntu.com noble-updates, unmodified)
- Kernel: 7.0.0-42-generic
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT (0000:03:00.0)
- CPU iGPU also present (0000:13:00.0)
- Motherboard: MSI B650 Carbon WiFi
- Monitor: Dell U3415W (3440x1440), tested on DP, mini-DP and HDMI
Symptoms with 0ubuntu3.4:
The kernel log is flooded several times per second with:
amdgpu 0000:03:00.0: [drm] *ERROR* Error queueing DMUB command: status=2

DMCUB error - collecting diagnostic data
The desktop becomes nearly unusable: cursor moves in tiny jumpy
steps, keyboard input is lost, Caps Lock LED doesn't respond.
Happens on every boot, on DP and HDMI alike, and survives a full
power-off.
Firmware versions loaded (RX 9070 XT, 0000:03:00.0):
- With 0ubuntu3.4:
Loading DMUB firmware via PSP: version=0x07002F00
Wait for DMUB auto-load failed: 3
DMUB hardware initialized: version=0x07002F00
- With 0ubuntu3.3:
Loading DMUB firmware via PSP: version=0x0A000800
DMUB hardware initialized: version=0x0A000800
The DMUB version shipped in 3.4 appears lower than the one in 3.3,
and auto-load fails immediately at boot. Possibly the wrong/older
dcn_4_0_1 DMCUB binary was packaged in 3.4.
Timeline:
- 2026-11-06 22:28 local: 0ubuntu3.4 installed (system already running)
- System ran normally until shutdown next morning (old firmware
still loaded)
- 2026-11-07 15:55: first boot with 0ubuntu3.4. Problems began
immediately and continued on every boot after.
Expected: display works normally, as with 0ubuntu3.3.
Workaround / confirmation:
Downgraded to 0ubuntu3.3 (from Launchpad), ran update-initramfs -u
-k all, did a full power-off. Errors are gone and the desktop is
normal. Package is now on hold at 0ubuntu3.3.
