@superm1 - filed as bug #2173622, per your request in comment #40. To answer your questions: kernel is 7.0.0-42-generic, and /sys/class/drm/card1/boot_display is 1 on the AMD iGPU while the NVIDIA (card2) has no boot_display attribute at all. So the kernel commit you guessed at is present and working. The regression is in the xserver boot_display backport itself, and it needs a monitor attached to the dGPU to reproduce.
