It is definitely a bug in some combination of the KM400 Unichrome hardware
and the X code. I get the
same thing, with either the via or openchrome drivers, unless I do Option
"NoAccel" (painful). Tried lots
of combinations of disabling DRI, GLX, AGPDMA, COMPOSITE, etcetc, and with the
openchrome driver
trying the new EXA accel architecture, tweaking options for that, using
DisableIRQ (my Averitec hasn't worked
since kernel 2.6.15 without acpi=noirq) etcetc, and with either via or
opencrome and acceleration enabled, kde4 not only crashes on startup, but then
leaves X in a state where if I try to alt-f1 to a console, it hangs
the display and it is time for alt-sysrq-{s,u,b}.
It would be interesting to know exactly what kde4 is doing that kde3 and
gnome don't do which triggers this,
because then it might be fixable. But this is not a kde4 bug. Works fine
without accel, using it right now. However, I would be pleased to try to help
KDE4 people zero in on this and file it with the X people.
