Try using the latest daily-live iso found at:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/
Sound just works out-of-the-box now with the recent changes on the
Inspiron 1420. It also appears to work without changing gnome-volume-
control settings. I'm going to do a fresh install today to test this.
