This is not really a problem about xfont-wqy versions, but about packaging. The old Debian/Ubuntu package compresses the PCF fonts, which is the reason for the slow down. Now Debian has fixed this bug by using uncompressed PCF fonts, and Ubuntu hardy has synced the new version, so this bug is fixed in hardy, i.e., will be fixed when 8.04 is released.
