I don't understand what you mean by "latest Ubuntu release".  Isn't 7.10
the latest release?  Trying the alpha of Hardy Heron is not an option I
would want to try right now (I'll wait for the beta at least).

The offending file was slatec
(http://people.scs.fsu.edu/~burkardt/f_src/slatec/slatec.f90), which has
around 300 thousand lines.  I just tried opening the file, with the
draw-spaces plugin active and in disabled highlight mode, and it seems
to work just fine (it also works with enabled highlight mode, but it's
too slow to be practical).
