I had the same problem with the mozmapi32.dll file that Fondulac mentioned. I have discovered a workaround.
I am running Windows Vista Business, and part of the issue I think stems from User rights. TBird's automatic updates feature does not work for me since somehow it thinks I am a user with limited rights, and not the administrator, and program updates require admin privileges. And this even though I am logged on as owner/administrator. Beats the heck outa me. So as a result, I downloaded the complete version, tried to install over the old version, and got the mozmapi32.dll error message. I tried deleting this file, but the system wouldn't let me, again I think a function of confusion about admin privileges. However, I renamed the filed mozmapi31-2.dll, which the system did allow me to do. I then moved everything in the Thunderbird program folder on the desktop, with no T Bird fold in the Progrram directory, then installed Tbird, and the installation went through. The program seems to be working now.
