The changes I provided in the patch included here were commited into the HAL project on 2007-12-07, and form part of the debian package for HAL 0.5.10-5:
HAL 0.5.10-5 is part of HARDY, but the patch has NOT been backported to Feisty or Gutsy. The change above can be applied to any of these: there should not be any problem with compatibility as this area of code is very stable.
