I looked through the listing from the dpkg-query command and I didn't see anything in /usr/X11R6 either. This makes me think that there was an incomplete clean-up of a previous version. I have never installed thunderbird on this system using any other method other then apt-get. I did a distr-upgrade to Hardy Heron. Because of some earlier issues unrelated to this that I could not resolve, the installation of gutsy was fresh and not upgraded from feisty.
I have no idea where the original symlink came from, any thoughts would be appreciated. I have included a text file containing the dpkg-query output. btw, should /usr/bin/thunderbird be a symlink or is it a stand-alone script? I need to fix this so it is consistent with a proper Hardy installation.
