Hitting escape to skip checking isn't the function of e2fsprogs. Maybe this is an upstart/initscripts thing? I haven't tried using Hardy yet, so I'm not sure what you are referring to here, but I can tell you for sure that e2fsprogs doesn't pay attention to the escape character....
