That was the problem. Apparently the package name for the gutenprint I installed under 7.04 wasn't checked for by the 7.10 upgrade software, so it installed the second copy of gutenprint from a differently named package. Once I'd removed the one I installed and reconfigured the world, things seem to be working again.
Even the KDE printer configuration tool was able to find my old Epson Stylus C80 this time, which it definitely could not do under 7.04. I'm not sure what to call this in the end. Perhaps it isn't a bug per- se, but it does seem to be a problem to me. There have to be others in a similar situation, but perhaps very few actually use the upgrade feature of adept to do the upgrades. An installation from CD that reformated the root directory and replaced all of it's contents would have avoided this issue. I'll probably do that in the future given the pain of this particular issue. Thanks for your help.
