I have forced the system to use i810 driver by adding the line Driver
"i810" to the Devices section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Now my system
works as expected. The same hack had worked for gutsy as well. (See my
post submitted on 2007-11-01 above for the changes after using this
driver.)

As far as I understand, "i810" and "intel" drivers (drivers sets???) are
alternatives to each other. Although i915 is stil used according to
lsmod, I think this the one provided by the i810 driver set and replaced
the one from the intel driver set.

The i810 drivers appear to be more stable  than the intel drivers. By
the way, the Screens and Graphics tool can't change drivers. It is also
misplaced in the menu. It is under Applications > Other instead of
System > Administration.
