What version of Kubuntu and KDE are you using?
Could you test if you can reproduce this on Hardy?
Do you have thumbnail previews enabled? Do some of them successfully load but
maybe get stuck on the big files and crash?
Please install kdebase-dbg and see if you can get a better backtrace.
