I also experience this. I have a command-line install, and I compiled
and installed openbox 3.4.6.1 from source. I downloaded the latest ATI
driver from the website, built the packages and successfully installed
it according to the directions on the "Unofficial ATI wiki". The
install goes fine, but when the system is rebooted, and tries to start
an xsession after log in, the screen stays blank, and I am unable to
kill the xserver, switch consoles, or any other task. I have the ATI
Xpress 200m chipset on a gateway mt3705 laptop. The open source ati
driver does not cause this issue. When installing the driver from the
repositories, I didn't have this issue under a gnome desktop (hardy
beta), but I don't use a gnome desktop anymore, only for testing, which
is why this is presently an issue for me.
