I had the same problem, managed a workaround but with no clue of the cause of the problem. In the dialog asking to run a partial install i choose to close it instead of doing a partial install, this took me to the traditional update window, in it i was able to install the updates with no problem. It was a fresh install of alpha 8.04 on an eeepc laptop from Asus. Will check my desktop for this bug when i get home after work. Will try to check it deeper in there.
