I have since installed a fresh copy of 8.04 and the error doesn't occur anymore. The error was present when I was running 8.04 which was upgraded from 7.10. Now my kernel version is 2.6.24-12.
Number of things started going wrong with upgraded version which is why I switched to fresh install.
