I've had one or two of these per-boot on previous versions, but I'm seeing this
more on hardy (2.6.24-15-generic);
I've got about 20 of these in a row in a second or two in the logs:

[  871.568649] ACPI: Transitioning device [FAN0] to D0
[  871.568655] ACPI: Transitioning device [FAN0] to D0
[ 871.568658] ACPI: Unable to turn cooling device [ffff8100baa96dc0] 'on'
