Thank you for your interest. The version of Ubuntu is not important right now because I got it wrong. It was a hardware fault, specifically a bad memory chip. That is why it was difficult to find because each time the problem was similar but not quite the same. We live and, I hope, learn. Thank you again, J R Haisley.
