i was getting random freezing for almost two years and a few upgrades of xubuntu. it seemed to be associated only with running bittorrent for long periods of time or perhaps the screensaver trying to start. 3 weeks ago i upgraded my power supply and noticed that on the old one the -5V line was dead (or too weak), and since then i have had no freezing at all, even with 24/7 bittorrent, tor and apache servers running.
