Can you please try the following: * Plug in the device * Find out the device node, as it appears in "dmesg" output (such as /dev/sdb1) * Do "lshal > /tmp/hal.txt" in a terminal, and attach it to this bug report. * Copy&paste the output of "gnome-mount -vbd /dev/sdb1" (or whatever your device node is) here.
This shuold tell us whether it's a bug/overzealous check in hal or gnome-mount.
