Thanks, disabling "automatic building" seems to have fixed it for me.

Previously I had tried it with a variety of Java versions (sun java 1.6,
sun java 1.7beta, iced tea) and several eclipse versions (3.2, 3.4M6a)
and all showed the same problem.  It does also seem to have something to
do with the workspace metadata, as not all workspaces showed the same
crashing immediately after startup.

This is all on Hardy 64bit.
