What makes you think I am using update-rc.d as a sysadmin? I was
exploring why gdm on my system wasn't being started even though the gdm
package was updated in the meantime. The reason is that update-rc.d
doesn't discover that there's a missing link in rc2.d, which is a bug.

If update-rc.d finds that the links it is supposed to create already
exist, it should do a sanity check on those links.
