Finally made it through to install the beta, and once I updated, looks
like this is solved well enough.  It still throws the above error,
(still don't know what that is) before "Loading files needed to boot,"
but now seems to continue on and not block, and it was the blocking that
really was the crux of this bug.

Also, the splash screen's now working, so a first-time Live CD user
probably wouldn't even see that error, (forget whether it shows before
the splash screen loads or not).  For my part, would consider this bug
fixed.
