I have a similiar problem with Tracker in the last pre-release of Ubuntu
Hardy.

Three days ago I did upgrade Ubuntu on my laptop (firstly from Feisty to Gutsy
and next from Gutsy to Hardy), because I wanted to try Hardy before his release.
When the upgrade process was successfully finished I restarted my laptop
and log in into my account. After a few minutes my system has been unresponsible
and I had to shut down the laptop.

When I reboot my laptop then I found, using `top` command, that it was trackerd
process. It took a half of all available RAM memory (I have 512 MB on my
laptop).
After a few minutes my Ubuntu has been unusable again. This time I didn't shut
down
my laptop, but I was waiting about 2 hours. Unfortunately it seems that it was
too much for Tracker, because it still was indexing my home directory. It's a
strange
for me, because I haven't got a big home directory. It's only about 16 GB.
The `top` process wasn't display any fresh information about my system
processes.
It simply hangs. I shut down my laptop next time.

Now I can use Hardy, because I've disabled Tracker from Gnome Sessions. I
haven't
remove it from my laptop, because I would like to help you to resolve that
problem.

If you want any more details, feel free to ask me. But you have to tell me
exactly
what I should try to do or what files I need to check. I haven't any
experiences with
such tools like Tracker, because I have never need to use them. The `find` and
`rgrep`
utilities are good enough for me for many years.
