It corresponds to LANG=C, which is equivalent to asking gettext to
display only the strings passed directly to it, with no attempts at
localisation at all. Setting a true English locale has slightly
different behaviour; for example there may be translations depending on
the selected dialect of English, different time and currency displays
are used, text sorting behaviour is different, and so on. A number of
old-time Unix folks prefer LANG=C because it has simpler and more
predictable behaviour, although in general we recommend English to most
English-speaking users.
