I have a workaround for this issue: set 'acpi=off' at kernel boot.

I discovered this by comparing the kernel boot options used by the Live
CD with those used after installation to disk.

I will test and see what acpi functionality I have lost with the option
switched on.  But at least I can now access my Matshita optical drive!
