I'm having an identical problem on two different machines; in both cases
the logs indicate that the upgrade is "Removing ubuntu-desktop rather
than change pulseaudio-esound-compat", which then causes the upgrade to
fail because "The package 'ubuntu-desktop' is marked for removal but
it's in the removal blacklist".

Removing the "esound" package via Synaptic has allowed me to perform the
upgrade on one of the machines - the "Update Manager" approach hangs,
but "sudo do-release-upgrade" in a terminal worked. I haven't tried it
on the second machine yet.
