I just upgraded to Hardy Heron 64-bit as well, and was repeatedly unable
to get the screen to use its native resolution of 1680x1050. After
uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers, manually editing my xorg.conf,
and rebooting repeatedly, I finally got to a point where xrandr was at
least showing the higher resolutions; at that point they became
available as choices in the System->Preferences->Screen Resolution, and
I can now see native pixels.

However, I have a new problem: Occasionally my mouse pointers develop a
lot of visual garbage around them, dots and stripes which follow the
pointer around, especially after visual effects (like closing or opening
windows).

I am attaching the files that seem to be frequently requested
(xorg.conf, /var/log/Xorg.0.log). Below is the output of xrandr now
(previous to my hacking around it only showed the incorrect, 1400x1050
option):
