in Gutsy, compiz worked fine. But when I upgraded to Hardy it stopped working 
and I get this message:
"Desktop effects could not be enabled"

my system is sony vaio vgn-a230

lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M9+ 5C61 [Radeon 
Mobility 9200 (AGP)] (rev 01)

I confirm that by running the following command compiz starts (and it seems 
that it works fine):
echo SKIP_CHECKS="yes" >> ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager
