I have this problem as well. For me, in Gutsy, when this happened I
could restart Hal and the drives would show up again, then I could
unmount them. There appeared to be no data loss when I did this. Now
that I have upgraded to Hardy I get this message in dmesg when I try to
restart Hal:  hald-probe-volu[16639]: segfault at 00000000 eip 080497b3
esp bfdcca20 error 4

I have Amarok set to not handle my removable drives.
