Some further observations.
Yesterday I was able to boot Ubuntu 8.04 with 2.6.20-16-generic without any
additions to the kernel line in menu.lst and shut down was normal.
Failure of the shut down process with 2.6.24-16-generic which is now my main
complaint seems to be centered just on the final phase. The Ubuntu processes
are halted, it sounds like the IDE hard drive head is being parked but the
power supply isn't cut off. Currently I'm booting with pci=noacpi and more
recently have been able to install the restricted Nvidia driver so I've
1440x900 res available if I want it.
It is only in the last 2 days after being unable to boot 2.6.24-16-generic and
that I view my failed update of 2.6.22-14-generic (2.6.22-14.51) in February
was probably linked to this ACPI issue. Looks like some change were made to the
ACPI handling in kernals onwards from 2.6.22-14-generic (2.6.22-14.51) which
upsets my Asrock motherboard.
Suspend works but not resume. This is not important to me, would a log report
help?
