If the machine can't be reached over the network, then usually that
means there has been a kernel failure.  That it fails with -intel but
not -vesa is a strong clue that the issue is video card related, but it
could just be due to trying to use some feature of your hardware that
-vesa doesn't support or something (e.g. DRI/Compiz).

The error message about no device for 0.2.1 is normal, it just means
there wasn't a second monitor detected.

I'm going to bump this over to the kernel bug team to triage at this
point.
