Hi eb207, As unggnu mentioned earlier, care to attach the output of 'sudo lspci -vvnn'.
You mentioned this does not happen with a Gutsy LiveCD and that you upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy. Do you by chance still have the Gutsy kernel available on your system. Would you be able to boot from the Gutsy kernel - might help narrow down that this is indeed a regression in the kernel. Also, just as a test, care to try testing with the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 kernel. It was most recently sync'd with the upstream 2.6.25 kernel and is currently available at the following PPA (personal package archive): https://edge.launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+archive If you are not familiar with how to install packages from a PPA basically do the following: Add the following two lines to /etc/apt/sources.list deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu hardy main sudo apt-get update You should then be able to install the linux-image-2.6.25 kernel package. Please let us know your results. This will indicate if the bug exists using the upstream kernel and where the kernel team will want to focus getting this resolved or pull the fix from.
