You say that kernel panic stuff is not in the log. Does your caps lock key
/blink/, or at least change from its original state, by any chance? Blinking
the lock keys is one of the kernel's last-resort ways to report a kernel panic.
The current lockup issue (which has become prevalent) is observed to kill hard
drive access. (My suspicion is that is a bug of its own, then everything which
does not kill disk access -- ie: Leaves a log -- is a different bug entirely).
