I believe I have found a very HOT candidate for the patch that we are all looking for (see upstream bug report at freedesktop.org for more details). 107_radeon_reupload_textures_on_resume.diff from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/feisty/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/1:6.6.3-2ubuntu6/+files/xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.6.3-2ubuntu6.diff.gz. I'll try and compile the latest hardy package with this patch applied in my PPA. Keep your fingers crossed.
