I have an interesting observation to share with you. Switching between X and VT *is* possible and even with the latest, unpatched version in hardy. This problem also seems to depend on how xorg.conf is configured. With the attached xorg.conf, I can switch between X and VT, albeit quite slowly. I have not yet gotten this back to work with Xinerama/MergedFB and X now runs on VT10 or VT11 instead of the usual VT7.
